DAY 1 We head off this morning to Dover, for our short ferry crossing to Calais. From here, we complete our journey to our centrally located hotel in a quiet street just a short walk from the centre of Lille.
DAY 2 This morning we spend time exploring the shops and bistros that line the windy cobbled streets of Lille old town. As Saturday is market day in the main square – Place Sébastopol – you may wish to browse the market stalls. You could visit the town hall – from the top of the belfry, see the view which stretches from the Porte de Paris and runs all the way to the hills of Flanders in Belgium. Back on the ground, you can visit la Grand Place, which is also called Place du Général de Gaulle after the former French leader who was born in Lille. You can also visit the nearby Vieille Bourse, the Old Stock Exchange, with its courtyard made up of 24 identical houses that are decorated with coats of arms. Stroll along the sloping cobbled lanes of Lille’s old town and look up to scan the facades of the Flemish-inspired houses. This afternoon we visit the nearby city of Arras, known for its two ornate squares brimming with shops and restaurants. Discover a city with 2,000 years of history behind it – you might like to visit the Museum of Fine Arts or Cité Nature to find out more, or perhaps stroll along the banks of the River Scarpe before heading to the Grand’ Place.
DAY 3 Today we head to the Belgian city of Bruges where you have time at leisure to explore this lovely city, distinguished by its intricate network of canals, cobbled streets and medieval buildings. Maybe try a river cruise or horse-drawn carriage ride, or sample a beer in one of the traditional Belgian breweries. This historic city with its UNESCO World Heritage City status is packed with history, beautiful architecture, shops selling lace and famous Belgian chocolate and lovely public squares.
DAY 4 After breakfast, we begin our journey home, stopping on the way at a Belgian chocolate factory where you can stock up on your favourites to take home with you. We then continue to Calais for our ferry crossing to Dover, before finishing our homeward journey.
