FRI We head off this morning, making our way down to Devon. En route, we call in to the glorious destination of Buckfast Abbey. Located at the centre of a picturesque valley on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, the site is home to a community of Benedictine Monks, and includes beautiful spacious gardens to explore. We then continue our journey to Torquay, arriving in time to settle in to our hotel before this evening’s meal.
SAT This morning, we are joined by our local guide for the Agatha Christie English Riviera Experience. We start off with a short presentation at our hotel, telling the story of Agatha’s extraordinary life and then embark on a guided coach tour through the English Riviera, stopping at key Agatha Christie landmarks. We then make our way to Kents Cavern for a private tour of Britain’s oldest home which holds a direct link to Agatha’s family, before sitting down to a delicious Devonshire cream tea.
SUN We set off from the hotel this morning for the short journey to Babbacombe Model Village and Gardens. Feel like a giant as you step through the small entrance and the vast miniature world opens up before you. The four acres of award-winning gardens, showcasing beautiful streams and waterfalls, are an idyllic setting for hundreds of models, scenes and miniature residents. The model village portrays Britain through the decades, with some well known landmarks and many hidden puns and fun scenes. We then head back to Torquay, where you have time to spend at leisure and enjoy this traditional and thriving seaside town with its iconic palm trees, busy harbour, international marina, sandy beach and the historic Princess Pier.
MON After breakfast this morning, we leave our hotel and head to the Seaton Tramway. This narrow gauge heritage tramway in East Devon’s glorious Axe Valley travels alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves, giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. From the main station in Seaton, we board our electric tram and make our way to Colyton Station where you might wish to visit the Tramstop Café before your return journey back to Seaton. We then rejoin the coach and make our way home, arriving in the local area in the late afternoon.
