WED After an early start this morning we head to Dover where we take the ferry across to Dover and then continue on to our comfortable overnight hotel in Metz.
THU We continue our journey to Feldkirch, via the Black Forest and Switzerland, arriving at our hotel in time for a welcome drink before this evening’s dinner and drinks.
FRI This morning will be devoted to Feldkirch; starting out with a guided tour through the narrow mazes to imposing Schattenburg Castle with entry to the huge museum. Enjoy a magical sleigh ride, and have time at leisure in Feldkirch, then return to the hotel for a cup of Glühwein, the hot wine drink of the Alps, and a piece of Frucht-Stollen.
SAT After breakfast we head to the snowy Bregenzer Wald, where you will be able to taste the famous Bergkäse – the area’s famous mountain cheese – and then visit beautiful Schwarzenberg. The famous painter Angelika Kauffman spent her childhood here and her early artwork can be viewed in the parish church!
SUN The old cathedral town of Chur is the starting point of your trip with the Rhaetic Railway, a narrow-gauge Alpine railway which will take you up through the splendid mountain scenery to the famous winter sports resort of Arosa. Here you can go for a walk around the little lake before returning to Chur by train then travelling back to Feldkirch.
MON We start the day travelling towards Lake Constance and the charming island town of Lindau, beautifully located on an island in the lake and well known for its historic old town and picturesque harbour. One of the highlights of the visit is the impressive painted “Rathaus” (Town Hall), famous for its colourful frescoes and historic character. On the way back we travel through Bregenz, where we make a short stop to see the unique floating opera stage on the lake, home of the internationally known Bregenz Festival.
TUE We bid farewell to Austria today, and head to Metz and our overnight hotel.
WED We continue our homeward journey via the ferry, arriving back in the early evening.
