THU After an early start this morning, we head to Dover for our short ferry crossing over to Calais. From here, we continue on to our hotel in Alphen aan den Rijn, arriving in time for our evening meal, followed by tea or coffee.
FRI We spend today visiting the ‘Historic Triangle’ in northern Holland. Board a heritage ferry in the pretty town of Enkhuizen and sail across the Ijsselmeer to Medemblik, enjoying a drink and apple pie on board. On arrival, there is time to explore this charming village and have lunch before boarding the beautifully restored and historic Steamtram for Hoorn. Your journey takes in some of the original old station buildings and bridges as you travel through the countryside on this nostalgic ride.
SAT We head off to the splendid Keukenhof Gardens today, where floral arrangements are found in a picture book setting of old trees and waterways. Covering an area of 32 hectares with over seven million bulbs, it is one of the world’s largest flower gardens. Widely known for its tulips, the gardens also feature numerous other flowers alongside themed pavilions and indoor exhibitions. During your visit, you will also experience the world-famous Flower Parade where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant colours of spring during this spectacular event which captures the essence of Dutch culture.
SUN Get a taste of Holland today, as we head to Volendam, a Dutch town known for its colourful wooden houses and the old fishing boats in its harbour, which is lined with seafood vendors. Walk along the promenade, discover its quaint shops and pretty architecture and have a drink at one of its cafés. One of the most characteristic things about Volendam is its traditional costumes, sometimes still worn by its inhabitants. If you want to take a curious souvenir with you from Volendam, head to one of the town’s photography shops where you can try on the costumes and get your picture taken. We then head back to our hotel, with time to spend at leisure. Perhaps take advantage of the included entry to the Avifauna Bird Park which is located right next to the hotel, or if you’re feeling lucky head to the hotel’s connected casino!
MON We begin our homeward journey this morning, returning via the cross channel ferry to Dover, and then back to the local area in the early evening.
