MON We head off this morning to the Kent coast. En route, step into the historic city of Canterbury, where medieval streets, stunning architecture, and the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral create a captivating blend of heritage and charm. We then continue on to our seaside hotel in Folkestone, arriving in time for our evening meal.
TUE Discover the historic Cinque Port of Hythe, from its promenade to unique high street shops, before enjoying a nostalgic journey on ‘Kent’s Mainline in Miniature’, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, across Romney Marsh to Dungeness, the eerie home to a host of artists and the ‘listening walls’ built for early signs of enemy aircraft. We then continue into East Sussex, to the picturesque town of Rye, with its cobbled streets, historical buildings and past links to smuggling, where you will have time at leisure before we head back to our hotel.
WED We set off for White Cliffs Country this morning, to beautiful Walmer Castle and Gardens. Built in 1540 as part of Henry VIII’s chain of coastal defences, centuries of domestic refinements have transformed Walmer Castle from a fortress to an elegant stately home with beautiful gardens. It is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and has been home to an incredible range of people, including Winston Churchill, the Duke of Wellington and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The magnificent, award-winning gardens include the glen, the yew-lined broadwalk, the productive kitchen garden, wildflower meadows and shady woodland. We then continue on to the pretty seaside town of Deal – here you can take a stroll along the pier, discover the history of the iconic Timeball Tower, or visit the award-winning High Street.
THU Today we head to the seaside town of Ramsgate, with its historic Royal Harbour. After time to explore the area, we head to the UK’s largest network of civilian wartime tunnels. Here, we take a tour and discover how this network of tunnels was built and listen to stories of underground life in World War II.
FRI After breakfast this morning, we make our way homewards, calling at the beautiful spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells on the way, before arriving home in the late afternoon.
