DAY I We travel to our hotel in Caernarfon this morning with comfort stops and lunch en route, arriving in time to settle in before dinner.
DAY 2 Today we enjoy a single journey on the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon through the spectacular Snowdonia National Park scenery to the historic harbour town of Porthmadog, which has no less than three narrow gauge railway stations. This afternoon, we visit the wonderfully quirky Italianate village of Portmeirion, where the cult I960’s TV series The Prisoner’ was filmed. Here you will find Riviera inspired houses, ornamental gardens and a campanile – a truly unique and beautiful private village.
DAY 3 Today’s excursion takes us into the very heart of Snowdonia to Llanberis in its beautiful lakeside location at the foot of Snowdon. We then board our train at Gilfach Ddu Station on the Llanberis Lake Railway for a return journey. Marvel at the breathtaking scenery as you travel alongside Llyn Padarn, returning with time to visit the fascinating National Slate Museum, where you can travel into the past of an industry and a way of life that has chiselled itself into the very being of this country. We return to the hotel with time for you to explore Caernarfon at your leisure.
DAY 4 After a leisurely breakfast we head back to Porthmadog this morning for a memorable nostalgic rail trip on the world’s oldest narrow gauge railway – the famous Ffestiniog Railway. Taking you on a 131/2 mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the historic train climbs over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round tight bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunnelling through it, offering a magical combination of spectacular landscapes and historic railway. Afterwards, we head to Beddgelert, known as Snowdonia’s loveliest village, where we can enjoy time to explore the charming streets and welcoming cafes, and learn some of the tales associated with this historic village.
DAY 5 After breakfast, we head off on our journey home, stopping for coffee and lunch en route and reaching home in the early evening.
