THU After an early start this morning, relax on the coach as we head north to Preston to our overnight hotel, with stops en route for coffee and lunch.
FRI After breakfast, we head out and continue our journey north into Scotland, calling at the world-famous Gretna Green en route. We visit Scotland’s most famous horses, the Kelpies, which are the world’s largest equine sculptures, towering 100 feet over the Forth & Clyde Canal and are an impressive sight to see. We then enjoy a boat trip on the unique Falkirk Wheel, an amazing feat of engineering and the world’s first and only rotating boat lift, which connects the Forth & Clyde canal with the Union Canal. Opened in 2002, it requires only the power of eight domestic kettles to sail boats through the air and transfer them between the two canals. We then continue on to our hotel for the next two nights on the outskirts of Glasgow, with time to settle in before dinner.
SAT After a hearty Scottish breakfast, we head to Edinburgh where you will then have time to explore this thriving city – Edinburgh offers a wealth of attractions, from the historic Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile to the interactive exhibits at the National Museum of Scotland. Climb Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views, explore the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant arts and festival scene before your early evening performance of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo – a truly remarkable and internationally acclaimed event. This thrilling and moving experience, set against the world famous backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, will incorporate the unforgettable music of the massed pipes and drums, the massed military bands, as well as imaginative graphics, state-of-the-art lighting, singers, dancers and many other performers from around the world. The show is finally brought to an emotional and poignant close each evening as the Lone Piper, high on the castle ramparts, plays a haunting lament.
SUN This morning we head to York to our overnight hotel. Step into the historic city, where ancient walls, cobbled streets, and the majestic York Minster create a captivating blend of past and present. Explore at leisure before heading back to the hotel for dinner.
MON We head homeward today, arriving back in the early evening.
