MON We set off this morning and head north, stopping en route for coffee and lunch, arriving in time for dinner at our hotel in the heart of the medieval walled city of York.
TUE After this morning’s breakfast we make the short journey to Castle Howard, one of England’s grandest Baroque mansions and the perfect setting for the hit TV series ‘Brideshead Revisited’. Set within a thousand acres of breathtaking landscape and sweeping parkland dotted with statues, temples, lakes and fountains, you can enjoy lavishly decorated rooms, stunning architecture, idyllic gardens and lakeside walks during your visit. We then continue on via Sutton Bank to the traditional market town of Thirsk, boasting the spectacular backdrops of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, which was home for the famous vet and author James Herriot.
WED We start the day in York with a relaxing cruise along the River Ouse. The rest of the day is for you to spend at your leisure. Within York’s towering medieval walls is a heart of rich and colourful character, with its history recorded in the streets, buildings and museums gathered around the mighty Minster. Discover as many of the treasures and architectural gems this remarkable city has to offer, its cobbled streets, the famous Shambles and the National Railway Museum to name but a few.
THU We head to the historic market town of Pickering this morning, and the 1930s themed station which will transport you back in time to the steam era. Take time to explore the visitor centre and tea rooms and then we board the train for a wonderfully nostalgic trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Head through 24 magnificent miles of stunning scenery and the ‘celebrity station’ at Goathland which featured in Heartbeat and as Hogsmeade Station in the Harry Potter films, before pulling into the historic coastal town of Whitby, with its famous cliff-top Abbey. See the original Larpool Viaduct before exploring this bustling seaside town and maybe sampling some scrumptious traditional fish and chips during your visit.
FRI After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our way back to the south, with stops en route, arriving back in the early evening.
